A fantastic, friendly obanzai restaurant providing dishes that your Kyoto mom might prepare. Can’t get this outside Japan or even Kyoto. Great choice for a memorable evening.
Been in Japan a week now; this was the first poor meal.
Really good restaurant to have traditional Kyoto dishes. Keep in mind that the portions are small and if you don't speak japanese they have some translated menu with a few dishes. Always ask for osusume (recomendation) and go with that
Great little spot. Came here initially for sake tasting, ended up staying for dinner. Menu was sorta in english. Staff was helpful in picking food. Tried the gratin and the tempura. Gratin was cheese with tofu and peppers. Both were tasty
Classic Japanese experience at this intimate Kyoto restaurant. From the host to the chefs, everyone was so welcoming and gracious- even though we didn’t speak Japanese and there were no English menus, they created a memorable omakase experience for us. And the food was delectable!
Great choice for a casual dinner in the city, and a taste of Kyoto obanzai. Tasty small plates ranging from vegetables, grilled fish/meats, stews, sushi and fried dishes. Everything was well-balanced and in-season, and reasonably priced. Start off with the obanzai plate, and make sure to try the oxtail soup and salted grilled fish. Expect to pay ¥3-5,000 for dinner and a few rounds of drinks.
This is izakaya (pub), not for dinner. Quantity of dishes is small while price is a bit high. Ordered main sashimi and fried onion& seafood. It's delicious. No English menu board. But there was no one can explain dishes in English, so I've run google translator. Recommend to local persons, not to foreigners.
The kitchen was run by five people. I visited from Corona on Saturday, June 20th. After 19:00 to 20:30. Boiled octopus can be served nicely, such as a platter of obanzai. It's a very good shop. By the way, the name "Menami" comes from the name of the founder and grandmother of the current landlady. It is a long-established store with a long history and is also an affordable bar. It is a long-established store in Kyoto and can be recommended as an affordable store.
One of the best local obanzai restaurant. The sansyo lamb chop, the daikan with tofu skin, oxtail with potato are all so delicious. Some people said it is not a dinner place, urgh, this is as dinner-after-work as u get. The size of each dish is traditional size and meant to be shared. Sure it is more than the average izakaya, but way cheaper than any kaiseki restaurant you will visit. I think this would be a good place to sample some excellent home cooking without breaking the bank. Beware that the high chance that u will have to sit on tatami.I been there every time I visit Kyoto. I feel like they have more foreigners visiting than before and even as they still don't have English menu, the one waitress is able to speak a little English. Plus Google translate FTW. Call ahead if u can, the staff at your hotel and hostel will be more happy to help.
Firstly, there in no sign in English so look at my photo - they are the bottom left box. Go past the lift and open the sliding door - ground floor. Tempura was amazing.
Highly recommended.
8 seats at the counter and 2 tables, I was lucky to be able to eat there!Handwritten menu of the day is only in Japanese but the waitress spoke good English and could explain me the content of the large bowls on the counter (duck, dumplings, aubergine, daikon...) and other available options (sashimi, grilled meat...).Staff and other customers were friendly and the food was very good! Definitely a great place to discover Kyoto's cuisine.
Amazing food!! Everything is so fresh and surprising. Spices, taste... wow! It was a wonderful experience and the staff was exceptional.
Best place to rest sushi and sashimi! Fish is fresh and delicious. Sets of sushi are big. Eel was perfect. Traditional desert was also very good.
Nice home cooking and friendly staff...
All the food came at once. The worst Shashi I have ever had. When we booked we were supposed to have a table downstairs but we were sent upstairs. It lacked any atmosphere. It was rubbish
Great traditional Japanese food & great service
Great little place to get an introduction to why Japanese food (and especially Kyoto dishes!) are so unique and adaptable. Fresh and unfussy, but with high quality ingredients and purposeful cooking by a young chef and his small team.
We were herded upstairs into a brightly lit almost empty room away from any of the atmosphere of downstairs. We waited almost fifteen minutes at our table without any menu, drinks order, or attention of any kind. We then got up and left and thankfully found the restaurant of our dreams just down the street.
The food was amazing. Loved the sardines, Japanese brown tea, and everything else!
